Services
JupiterBase.com offers web development, network administration, backup/disaster planning, and data mining services with over 10 years experience in each category.
Focusing on Linux and Open Source Software (OSS) solutions, clients get secure, flexible services without costly licensing fees, hardware, and software.
For example, a typical mail server solution using Windows Server 2008 Small Business Server that includes Exchange and all the required licensing (20 CALs = 20 people using the server) is well over $3,500. Thats just the base software, minimal spam filtering, and no antivirus. Microsoft recommends using 2 servers, one for the back-end and the other for web facing Outlook Web Access and SMTP. (Note: Virtualization could be helpful here) In most cases this will be a costly hardware purchase. Grand total, at least $6,000
Now lets talk Linux. Even though Linux has services like Exchange, do you really need all that stuff (Calendar, Scheduling, Notes) integrated into a mail server? Not me. I want my mail to be filtered for SPAM, malware, phishing, and viruses. Additionally I want it to run on the cheapest computer available. Linux can deliver these features in a typical small office environment for $1,000 or less. How? The software is free. There are no per-person license fees. The hardware is cheap. Plus its stable and secure.

Services: Web Development
Today everyone has a website. To effectively grab the attention of your audience, clients, and/or search engines,
web development projects go beyond simple web design. Using proven concepts from Steve Krugs Dont Make Me Think
and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques a properly built website can create an edge over your competition.
Using a web framework like BigMonster
for PHP or the excellent Perl Catalyst small simple or large dynamic
websites can be secure and easy to edit and maintain.
Another option is using a framework/content management system (CMS) like modx, joomla, or wordpress to create and manage your site. These PHP frameworks make site building easy, and affordable. To get started or talk about these options please contact me via email.

Services: Networks
When people think of networks they often picture a huge room of computers roaring in racks with wildly flickering lights. In some cases that is true, but a network is also your home computer and the method used to access the internet, or your small/medium office network.
If you are losing business productivity due to viruses, malware, or personal surfing in your small/medium office there are ways to protect computers and filter internet usage using an extremely low cost Linux and Open Source Software (OSS) solution.
At home, if you have a wireless router that has never worked correctly, or needs to be configured properly to filter internet usage, all it takes is a simple onsite visit to get things running smoothly.

Services: Backup/Disaster Planning
Backup and Disaster Planning is another area that is often dismissed as too costly in small/medium businesses and home networks. Without a consistent Backup/Disaster plan a network is a ticking bomb waiting to explode causing data loss and/or days or weeks of downtime.
What would you do if a main piece of hardware like a switch or a server failed today?
How often are your documents, financial records, pictures, or other vital data saved to external media? Daily? Weekly?
What would happen if a virus or natural occurance destroys data and/or hardware?
Unless you know the answers to these questions, your data or productivity is vulnerable. Thankfully, there are ways to protect your data daily, and have backup procedures in place to turn weeks or days of downtime into hours.

Services: Data Mining
The web is the largest source of data in recorded history. This is a double-edge sword when you are searching for specific information. Search results are usually as broad as the search terms. Thats where data mining experience begins to locate those needles in the gigantic internet haystack.
Manually searching and parsing results is too time consuming. Using automated, advanced searching techniques and scripts for parsing the results, the time spent finding results is drastically reduced, while the amount of raw data searched and delivered as usable results is greatly increased.
Then, depending on the scope of the project the results can be refined into usable formats like CSV files, a common application import standard.
